Welcome to our Substack!
We’re so glad you’re here. This, like so many things we create here at Light in the Attic, is a labor of love and a long time coming. We’ve been brewing our Substack tea all year long in hopes to bring you a fresh glimpse behind the bulb from our little record label / distribution company that could.
Seriously though, our goal in launching this Substack is to keep you in the know and pull back the curtain a bit. We’ve always got our hands in multiple pots, and we truly love to share about our releases, both the new ones and the old cornerstones, too.
Who is this “we” we speak of? Well, it’s label co-owner & founder Matt Sullivan, for starters. Then there’s me, Lydia. I’m the Label Coordinator here at LITA. We’ll also periodically hear from our staffers and friends of LITA. It takes a village to raise a record label??? Isn’t that how the saying goes?
Light in the Attic is and has always been an independent record label; early on, though, we have branched out and grown into a record label that’s also a worldwide distributor of other labels that also has a Sync arm for Film/TV licensing. We also got nominated for a few GRAMMYs and had one of our artists’ life stories turned into a Hollywood biopic, and we've traveled the world over in search of lost recordings and mysterious artists; most recently, we traveled to the other side of the globe to spread one of our beloved artist’s ashes (more on that in our next post).
Clearly, who we are is complicated at best, but we’re hoping to be able to highlight & distill the heart of LITA here with you. We’re nothing if not persistent, and we have stories for days. If you’re curious about what’s going on in the LITAverse, this is your new one-stop shop for a glimpse into current events, new releases, and ruminations from the minds behind the label. Kinda like an ongoing, in real time, digital version of our (in)famous zine (did you ever get a copy? and are you ready for its return?).
So, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being here, for reading this, and for supporting Light in the Attic. Whether you’re a newb or a seasoned LITA head, it’s our pleasure to welcome you to our Substack!
In gratitude,
All of us at Light in the Attic
There's a light on in the attic/ Though the house is dark and shuttered/ I can see a flickerin' flutter/ And I know what it's about./ There's a light on in the attic/ I can see it from the outside/ And I know you're on the inside... lookin' out. - Shel Silverstein
